The puppy (Kell) follows Arden and Dev to Gravaria, against his father's wishes, which in the long run likely saved his life. Dev continues to fight his feelings for Arden, which causes Arden to go to Kell to seek love and comfort. Dev is again upset at every decision he has ever made to turn Arden away. Meanwhile, Dev has a few secrets that he is not telling Arden. One of them, the murder one, isn't actually a huge deal for me, and I was a bit upset with Arden when she kept digging and saying that he was keeping secrets. The other two though are less forgivable. That he is in love with her and is pretending to not be because of a stupid sense of duty, and that he knows who her father is. Holding onto information on the paternity of someone is a really easy way to cause distrust. Arden finally figures out that she is not in love with Kell, but sees him as a friend. Would have been good if she realized this earlier, then she would not have broken his heart. Loku continues to be funny, and live up to his chaotic nature. Of course someone is out to kill her, and she almost kills a god in the course of all this action. The empress has issues with Arden, but all that magically disappears when she finds out who her father is. I liked Arden's father, he was calm and collected. I think Arden got her temper from her mother? or maybe her uncle.

A Soul For Chaos The Soulbearer Trilogy Volume 2 Crista McHugh 9781479236817 Books Reviews

This is the second installment of the Soulbearer Trilogy (A Soul for Trouble is book one) and I'm impatiently waiting for the third/final book. This is sci-fi without being too conveluted to follow. There is action, romance, angst and passion. As I reviewed for book one - HIGHLY RECOMMEND! [hurry up with #3!!!!!]
I love this book!! It's the second in the chaos series and is soo much better than the first especially with troubles feelings about Dev her guardian!!! I totally recommend this book to any one!! Love this authors work! Keep it up and can't wait for the third book!!
These are fun fantasy books and this was a good follow up to the first book- A Soul for Trouble. The main character- Arden, is a sassy witch that you can't help but like. I like these books because they are an easy read and great way to escape and enjoy a story. The romance story between Arden and Dev (her protector) is predictable but not too sappy. If you are looking for a great beach book, this trilogy is perfect for that.
I have found that in any trilogy, be it from Nora Roberts or J.R.R. Tolkien, the middle book is the most disappointing. We are not meeting each of the main characters and learning their strengths and weaknesses, personalities, or the challenges they face, unlike in the first book. Nor are we reading about a culmination of forces, both good and evil, that ends the great conflict as occurs in the last book of any decent trilogy. We may meet important characters or witness great battles, but the excitement of meeting new protagonists or engaging in the ultimate confrontation is missing. Instead, there tends to be a plodding nature to middle books, since any new characters are not really important and any interactions do not resolve the primary issue.

McHugh helps avoid that problem by taking our main protagonist, Arden, or Trouble as she is sometimes called, to a country unlike any she has seen before that is completely different from the environment in which we started the journey. McHugh also introduces new complex and intriguing significant secondary characters, while placing all of the characters into complicated and thrilling new situations that advance the story in an unexpected manner. In addition, Arden really grows in self-awareness and maturity, although she still tends to act and react without thinking things through. This is not quite as irritating as it sounds. While there is some of the middle book letdown here, it is minimal. At the end of the book, Arden and her friends are faced with a scary, but fascinating dilemma and a surprising request by Dev, the soulbearer's protector and another main character.

As in the first book, the writing is skillful and evocative. Unlike the first book, there are a few typos and some minor editing errors, but they are not intrusive and are sometimes amusing. Vulgarity, without swearing as we know it, remains, but there are no explicit sex scenes. This is not a young adult fantasy novel. Nevertheless, it is less crude than the first book and both books would only offend the very prudish. I thoroughly enjoyed this continuation of the story and will definitely buy the last book. While the book may not truly rate a full five stars, it is close enough to allow me to round up to five stars without hesitation. I highly recommend this book with the proviso that you will first need to read the initial book, which is a pleasure, in order to understand and enjoy this book as described in this review.

UPDATE I just learned that there are now four books. While I really enjoy the story and the.characters, I wanted this to be a trilogy. I am getting tired of authors who milk profits by continuing a storyline in a never-ending -ology that requires ongoing purchases to find out what happens at the end. I live soon a very restricted budget due to a disabling injury and only have a certain amount that I can spend on e-books. While many of these continuing stories are very good, I frequently have to forego them for financial reasons. Here I believed, based on this being called a trilogy, which connotes a complete story in three books, that I would only have to buy three books in order to enjoy a full reading experience. I am disappointed to learn that I must now purchase a fourth book to really, I hope, get to the end. I am also concerned about how a second "middle" book will read, given that typical middle book letdown. This also feels just a wee bit like false advertising. Why not call it what it is - the first, second, and third books in an ongoing serial. Anyway - an FYI.
I like the story line but the main character, Trouble, was so self absorbed sometimes or made decisions that made me want to reach out and smack her. But I believe this was done on purpose as she would later redeem herself. I am not a big fan of love triangles... especially after the Twilight series made it way too popular but I will buy the next book just to see how it finally ends for the prince.
If you read "A Soul for Trouble" and enjoyed it at all you will love this book! I wasn't really sure I wanted to continue in the series; I had read book 1 and enjoyed it, but wasn't totally thrilled with it. That changed with this book! I absolutely loved the book and read it in one sitting. This is a story that I will come back to when I am looking for something to read and I can't wait for the next book!
I loved this book as I did the last one but it wasn't as I guess exciting and action-packed. She got attacked a lot by (spoiler) Nelos, but it wasn't as actiony (that is a word!!) as the last book

A lot of the story was Trouble trying to figure out who she loved was it Kell or Dev?? I am Team Dev all the way but you fall in love with both of them some. This is of course while her life is constantly threatened.
Another thing that I was a little sad about was Cinder played no part on this book. NONE!! You get things like the ever present Dev comment of "He likes Trouble not than me", but Cinder does nothing.
Something I find quite interesting is you see Loku in what his body used to look like in a dream.
It wasn't nearly as good as the second book but it held surprises and it helps tie into the storyline nicely.
