Sins of the Demon Kara Gillian Diana Rowland Books

Oooh boy, things are really getting interesting in this urban fantasy series. In Sins of the Demon, demon summer and homicide detective Kara Gillian finds the tables turned on her when someone is tries to summon her to the demon world. At the same time, a series of seemingly natural deaths pop up in her terrotiry. When Kara discovers that all of the victims are connected to her, she knows that something is up. But will she manage to solve the mystery before she's ripped from this dimension?

I must admit, that I feel a little cheated with this one. Why give me cover like THAT with a book that provides the least amount of demonic sex scenes in the series thus far? In all seriousness, this was a really enjoyable addition to the series that does a great job of balancing the paranormal, mystery, and romantic elements. It also ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I know I'll need to check out the next book, Touch of the Demon, soon.

Sins of the Demon Kara Gillian Diana Rowland Books Reviews

4½ stars - There are big spoilers for previous books in the series in this review!

Sins of the Demon starts out with Kara being called to a body found on one of Beaulac's nature trails and it turns out she knows both the deceased and the person who found the body. A couple more bodies turn up and not only have both died in the same way as the first person, but Kara knows them as well. Not only does she know them, but she has reason to dislike all three and she may be getting set up to take the fall as a murderer. She's also dealing with the fact that someone, or something, is still trying to summon her to the demon realm, still figuring out how to handle the fact that Ryan appears to be a demonic lord, and Rhyzkahl is only making things more puzzling with answers he gives her to the questions Kara asks about Ryan and the messed up summoning years before where Rhyzkahl killed six summoners.

I love Kara and how she's tough and snarky, but when things go really badly, she reacts like normal people would, which includes having a meltdown every once in a while. I thought Rhyzkahl, Ryan, Jill and the others would have bigger roles in this book, but they're still great secondary characters. I do wonder what's going on with Jill, though, and why she takes certain things in stride without barely batting an eyelash, and I want to know more about Zach, why/how he looks human and, if that's not what he normally looks like, what the heck does he look like. ****spoiler**** More importantly how the heck is the kid going to look human?! ****end of spoiler**** I know others loooove him, but I'm still on the fence about how I feel about Rhyzkahl; I kind of like him, but I also think he's an ass at times (especially in one scene with Kara (who totally nutted up, yea!) in this book). Having said that, one of the things he reveals to Kara made me definitely want more of him in the next book to find out more about his backstory and, judging by how this one ended, I'd be shocked if he isn't in it more. After some of the revelations about Ryan in this book (and there are some doozies), I'm even more confused and, boy is this going to get interesting.

There are a lot of revelations in this book, but they just created even more questions and if you thought Secrets of the Demon ended on a cliffhanger, wait until you finish this one. And if you can't stand cliffhangers, I'd recommend waiting until closer to whenever Touch of the Demon comes out to read this book. I think this series just keeps getting better and better and I can't believe I have to freaking wait until next year to read the next one. Now that's evil.
Piss, Piss and more piss, I could have done without all the piss in the alleyways. For a small town they sure do have a lot of alley pissers!

One major problem I have with this series despite me liking it is that, I don't know what Kara gets from summoning demons, none Judeo/Christian constructs, except for becoming hunted since she started to summon demons. As a teen learning about the arcane gave her purpose and took her off a very rocky path. Honestly she maybe needs to do better police work than rely on demons to help her out. Since book one demons have only brought her trouble not help. She finally explores in this book that summoning maybe an addiction. I would have loved for Kara to speak to Tessa her aunt about summoning, and her untoward relationship with her demon lord Ryhzkahl, the demon who killed her grandmother. I am four books in and still can't get over that prior to this book Kara had never confronted him about this because they are knocking boots. Yes she is a grown woman and can have sex with anyone she wants, but Geez! She even confronts her own callousness about this incident, as granny was a summoner and knew the risk. I understand Rhyzkahl could kill her in a snap, but she isn't afraid to confront him, so what gives, why no railing. Hmmm.... Kara better watch her back, as I feel like I need to tell her to trust no one!.

Those who haven't read these books need to know that the series is urban fantasy not paranormal romance. There are physical relationships in the book, but the over all world building is core more than any romance. But then again Kara is a very complex characters that doesn't have all the answers. Her relationship with Ryan the pseudo FBI agent has not make any progress until this book. Kara has very complex relationships and sometimes confrontation relationship with everyone. She is a character that I do get mad at, with Kara's all too human failings, and her making poor decisions. The gal just puts too much out of her mind. Kara is changing and not necessarily in a good way. Kara is a very needy character, I normally don't like needy characters but Kara is very human in her neediness.

There are a lot of revelations that come to light in this book. I like complex dynamic of this series, but not everyone may. Since the police procedural part of the book centers around Kara, this plot works for me where others haven't. This is an urban fantasy series that so far can be hit and miss with the procedural subplot. I rather have the demons since the procedural aspect is weak in the series. I am happy and thrilled to where this book has taken the series.

I absolutely have come to adore Eilahn the cat obsessed demon! She is so darn cute. Also Zack and Jill's relationship progresses.

I was surprised to find a minor continuity error in this book, especially as it is from a major publishing house.
