Live and Let Die James Bond Novels Ian Fleming Books

Live and Let Die is the second book in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. I preferred Casino Royale, but this one is certainly a good Bond story. This time 007 is in the United States trying to deal with the dangerous Mr. Big, the leader of a well-organized mob dealing in drugs and smuggling. Bond is helped in his efforts to learn about Mr. Big's operations by the enigmatic and beautiful Solitaire. As was true in Casino Royale, Bond is also aided by Felix Leiter, the indomitable US CIA agent. The story leads from New York to Florida to Jamaica and has an outstanding ending as Bond once again saves the day under extremely perilous circumstances. The characters in the book are well written, but the book's descriptions of African-Americans are particularly dated since the book was written in 1954.

Read the book and enjoy Bond, but this was not Ian Fleming's best effort. Now on to Diamonds are Forever, the third book in the series.

Live and Let Die James Bond Novels Ian Fleming Books Reviews

For some reason the Complete James Bond collection isn't available for , so anyone who wants to read these light weight action packed books has to buy them individually. I'm not complaining, because I remember when I got my first iPad and tried to find the Bond books they weren't available at all.

You'll notice that price-wise they tend to hover around $8 each so when I saw this one at 99c I was ready to jump on it-- then I saw SPANISH EDITION and was glad I did-- I'm looking for these in English. Well, I decided to click on the LOOK INSIDE anyway and sure enough it was in English. Now that means either the book is in English or made a mistake in the listing (shocking!)-- so I took a chance and ordered it for 99c figuring that it was worth the risk-- and sure enough I just downloaded it and it is in English!

Woo! Great books these Fleming Bond's are-- they are racist, they are sexist, they are action oriented, they were written in a different time. Great summer reading.

Unbunch your panties and get ready for some fun.
I've read a couple of the books, always been a big fan of the movies. This book influenced at least 3 of the movies, but the perspective and the times when this was written makes Ian's handling of race issues cringeworthy. If you're willing to ignore that, the Bond character in the books seems to get hurt more frequently, it even impedes his lovemaking occasionally. There's also a bit of travelogue and cooking channel in here. All of that is in the movies, but when Bond offers a culinary critique in the movies it's a one liner, and when he travels to exotic locations it's a visual stimuli; however, in the book you learn about ingredients, recipes, and techniques, and you get a description of the type of grass blowing in the wind while the characters sleep on the train. Definitely a different experience, but I shall continue on. Proceed according to your palate.
This is the second James Bond Novel authored by Ian Fleming. James Bond comes to America, Harlem, then Florida, then Jamaica. It is a decent spy action thriller. I have never been a very big fan of James Bond movies, but this novel seems, pretty much like a literary version of a James Bond film.

The book was written by a British author in 1954. Coincidentally, 1954 is the same year of the historic United States Supreme Court Decision "Brown versus Board of Education". So what? The modern Civil Rights movement was just gaining traction in America. This novel is more consistent with the pre modern Civil Rights viewpoint. James Bond, as a white person, does battle with American black organized criminals. There is a LOT of dated ethnic nomenclature and stereotyping that could offend some readers. I do not believe in censorship or rewriting of novels such as this. I actually find a novel such as this provides much fuel for inner contemplation. Just be advised there is a lot of ethnic references in this novel.

Personally, the above observation aside, I think this is a somewhat better written novel than the first James Bond novel, "Casino Royale". There is a lot of descriptive narrative that I felt was more sophisticated than the prior novel. This novel can be read without having read the first novel. There is one character, an American, Felix Leiter, who makes an appearance in this novel, who had also been in the first novel. Obviously, "M" and Miss Moneypenny are ongoing characters.

When I was a youth growing up in America in the 1950s and 1960s, I was not allowed to read James Bond novels. I had friends of my age who did read them. All they talked about was the sexual aspects of these novels. By today's standards, I do not find these novels are not to be particularly salacious. But as a parent and grandparent, I would be very careful about allowing a child or grandchild to read these novels.

In summary, I am glad I read this novel, I liked it, but did not love it, I would not read it again without good cause. Thank You...
